South Atlantic Flathead

Post by Tim399 »

Does anyone know what a South Atlantic Flathead is?
Just saw an advertisement on tv for frozen fish, “Birdseye south Atlantic flathead” but I hadn’t heard of one before.
I searched the internet and couldn’t find any information about this fish. Very unusual.
Just want to know if anyone else has heard of them or knows anything about them?

I read something about the actual species a while back, but can't track down the info now.

It is no relation to flatties as we know them, and tastes nothing like it. Some deep-sea trawled species, I recall.

Just like a lot of the "whiting" you get in fish and chip shops these days. Comes from Europe and is nothing like our KG or sand whiting.

Mike.

Thanks mike I’ll search further.

I thaught it might’ve been one of those cases where it happens to share the same name as our now fairly costly flathead but is a complete different species.

The other 3 species they are advertising have a picture of the species when the item is viewed on the website

http://birdseye.com.au/our-range/frozen ... g-and-more

However the is still no picture of this flathead species

I see many families being fooled into buying a sub-par fish

I can handle fish from Europe but not from Asia!

I’ve seen “Flathead” fillets frozen in Coles and I reckon it’s been cut to look the same shape.

It is also called South American flathead. The only species I could find of South American flathead is a catfish species :?

If I hadn’t started fishing I would have no idea if I was getting Australian flathead or a foreign species. Still can’t find this species
