Kayak sail

Post by Franko »

So i was keen on having a sail for greater effiencincy and safety as i want to venture further in the bays and off shore. I toyed with the idea and researched many home made and brought sails. Still unsure which way i wanted to go.All i knew is that i couldnt afford 400 for a new pacific sail so i was lucky enough come across a s/hand one in qld for $100.00 the bloke was amazing he sent it to vic for the same price i received it yesterday with all the attachments and fitted at work lol. I am excited to give it a go and see what speeds and distantances i can cover. They are built really well and light weight deploys easily just like the videos. Im just not sure how to attach my control ropes im guessing its trial and error on the water.

Practice with no gear aboard at first in case you tip it, and work out how to upright it with sail attached in case you do.

Anything exerting a force on the yak can tip it if you are not quick enough to counter it. Though forward mounded sail may be less of an issue than a midship one.

Nice score Frank!
Is it fixed to the deck or strapped around the hull?

You won't have much issue in regards to the sail tipping you. They are pretty much just a down wind sail, though you can achieve a fair amount of crosswind sailing with it. Any sail mounted close to the bow and is not a rigged mast (think of an AI) has far less heeling affect, but S#!^ sometimes happens
