Great video. I've only been consistently yak fishing this season as I started late last season so limited my exposures to lakes/estuaries and I also didn't think I was fit enough at the time.
A couple of weeks ago I tipped out at Rickets in +15knots winds with swell & cop. It sure teaches you to appreciate your limitations equipment and training. I'd never been out in conditions that bad (the weather was predicted to be better). Even though there were other boats & Yaks it did feel lonely and very tiring to get back in an I think I've got a reasonable level of fitness.
Before I bought my Yak I did a paddle Kayak course at the SHQ Shack and was drilled on tipping & re-entry. It cost a couple of hundred dollars to do this (one-on-one) but on refelction I reckon it was the best money I spent on the sport yet along with a good PFD.
I used to teach SCUBA and the one thing I told students was that the first few outings were survival and learning to keep within your limits and not feel embarassed to abort - also self-rescue was the most important thing to know as a lot of the time that's all you've got.

After many years in the game, both as a participant, salesman, and Hobie rep, this doesn't surprise me. But it still angers me. This is the unfortunate consequence of the meteoric rise of the sport. People sit back watching youtube clips and think 'I can do that' and the truth is they can. But what is never shown in the most inspiring of clips is the countless hours of practice and training that lead up to it.

These days it is rare to find a kayak fisho that has bothered to do a sea kayaking course. Equally rare to find a kayak fisho with a bilge pump. And it is not at all rare to see complete beginners taking to open water without basic information and equipment. Sometimes this is the salepersons fault, but just as often it is the users fault. And these people breed!!!

Its incredible how many people think they know it all, without knowing jack. And in my short time working in a shop in Vic, I can honestly tell you guys that the problem is much worse in Victoria. Since returning here and observing what I have, I am genuinely concerned about the future of this sport in Vic. Port Phillip Bay is an idiot magnet, and kayak fishing is slowly becoming that to. Combine the two and we're left with an uncertain future.

Good video Rhino. Sometimes you just know someone is going to come to grief, eh. At the Bemm river ABT round I observed a guy head out on an Outfitter that he'd tried to rig out like a boat. I said to Scott 'that guys is going to tip over and lose his rods'. Those were the exact words. It took the second day for me to be proven right, but sure enough, I was. I have photos of this, but have resisted publishing because I don't want to embarrass anyone. But in time I will, as a classic example of what not to do (ie: over accessorize the yak without thinking it through).

I took my kayak out for the first time yesterday and I have to say that this video was in my mind at the time.

Other than not wanting to look like an idiot in front of everyone who might be watching by falling out etc, I also made sure to have all the required safety equipment and a paddle leash before I even contemplated testing out the new toy. Thanks for posting Rhino.

Yeah. This got me thinking too. Just yesterday I headed off somers, with the northerly gusts i was about 800m off shore pretty quickly and decided to hang out there for a gummy, the fishing ground was fantastic. I realised that I was further out when I saw the size of the container ship going past! In reflection these are the things I need to upgrade/consider before I do this again:

1. Find a friend to go with ;)
2. Practise re-entering the PA in a controlled environment (have never done this)
3. Upgrade my life jacket. Mine allows 3hrs of floatation time.
4. Leash my peddles
5. Leash my paddle
6. Put a spare small oar in the hull
7. Get a flag

Wow. When you make a list you realise how many things you need to have sorted.

On the upside I do carry my phone with me that is in a lifeproof case, with a lifeproof life jacket and secured to my jacket. Haha - now that I think about it, my mobile phone would stay afloat longer than me!!!

Thanks for the timely reminder everyone!

I'm glad that you guys have had this video come to mind and that you have taken steps to be safe on the water. That was the original intent of the video.
It was never intended to embarrass anybody, although I did concede in the original post that there was a risk that it could. I put it up as an eye opener as to what can go wrong and the possible consequences. I thought that there were lessons in it, particularly for the uninitiated and inexperienced.

For the most part the feedback has been positive. People have taken lessons from it, including the guys in the vid. But there were also criticisms.
Some thought I was yelling at the guys. They failed to realise that the camera was close to me, and just so that I could be heard over the wind and wave noise I had to raise my voice..
Some thought that I could have offered the guys more advice. Again what they failed to realise was that not everything that was said and done was filmed, and not everything that was filmed made the video.

One guy lacked to the courage to be critical on this thread but chose to have a subtle crack at me on another. I challenged him privately, where he suggested that I should watch my back because if these guys found out what I'd done they'd want to give me a touch up. Another thing he asked was if I'd been given permission by these guys to film and publish a video of them. To that end he had a point. I had not sought their permission, but promised that I would.

Soon after this exchange I happened to run into these guys again. I explained to them in detail what I'd done in producing the video, and my motives for it. I was also upfront in telling them about the criticism they received, and I also explained how they were also congratulated in the second video for listening to and taking on the advice given. It was put to them that If they didn't like what I'd done I would immediately delete the videos. They had no problem with it and gave me their blessing to continue using the vision.
They appreciated my honesty and thanked me for the help and advice. They were actually quite chuffed to be featured in a youtube video. They even offered to ring the guy who suggested that they'd want to give me a touch up and inform him that they were cool with it. I was happy to pass this information on to the member in question along with a message that he should stop being a troll and do something positive for the sport for a change. He hasn't posted on this forum since. I guess he had nothing positive to contribute.

This photo of Raj was taken last year on the day I told him of the videos. As far as I know he and his mate are still safely enjoying kayaking. More safely than they started anyway.

I've done a couple of re-entry videos you may not have seen and may be of some help. Here are the links.

I guess it was timely that you guys brought this thread to the fore again. I've personally got some real concerns going into this season. Lots of cheap and nasty yaks have been purchased over the off season and they'll be hitting the water with their inexperienced operators from now on. I hope we have an incident free season.

To finish this post the way it started, I'm glad that you guys have had this video come to mind and that you have taken steps to be safe on the water. That was the original intent.
