Legal or illegal

Post by Toady king »

I've got a fairly long and decently powerful car (Holden rodeo 2005) and was wondering if I can put 2 kayaks ( one on the kayaks leaning or resting slightly on the other) and strap them on to my roof ? Is legal and safe or am I asking for trouble ?

Sounds dodgy but as long as your overhang, weight limits for roofrack and your load is secure all good I with think. I got a picture in my mind . I would tie another rope around those 2 yaks where they join so they can't slip and put each other off balance.

I've done similar many times. It's not illegal (within overhang restrictions) and if tied on adequately and securely then it's also safe. You just need to be careful how you tie them on being aware of rub points between kayaks and the fact that they can settle and move during transit requiring them to be regularly checked and adjusted. Specialist racks made for positioning and securing yaks to racks are also a good idea to keep them positioned right.

Done this. strap first one down so it doesn't move then strap the other down with straps over both. It is important that you dont just put them both on then throw straps across them both, or they will move and straps become loose.

As Brian says as long as load rating and overhangs compliant it is fine. Just stop and check. Keep in mind when you brake heavy there is substantial load transfer to front roof bar as it attempts to seesaw.

Oh thanks for that. I'll remember to keep checking and making sure to take it easier on the braking

The problem starts when you go around the corner but your kayak doesn't :o
