Very sad news. The loss of any life is sad, preventable losses are particularly sad.

Yep my wife just gave me devil eyes. My response is unfortunately there are to many uneducated people in this world that do not the respect the water or the dangers that may will occur.

Very sad, if that was this morning the prediction was bad, but conditions were less than predicted then suddenly turned bad, that could have caught him out.

There are folks who are quite capable at 70 and well over.
One of the resons I did the surf day was to be part of a group that would be watching my performance. I also thought about how I was managing. Right near the end I did a swim both with and againd the flow along the beach.
What I took away was that a surf launch and Portland in particular is not for me now
A person needs to be honest with themselves in this sport. Also above my pay grade are fast flowing rivers, big lakes and timber infested areas.
its been a real bummer realising the constraints I now have, But that still leaves me heaps of venues and opportunities. I also learned never to go into unknown water alone
When my options reduce to most choices being risky I will quit.

Without taking away from the validity of the above comments, the Advertiser reported today the kayaker was a 47 yr old from Winchelsea. Perhaps the 70 yr old was the man who drowned the day before whilst swimming at the back beach.
Sad for his family regardless.
