The things you find, & then turn them into Dinner

Caught anything lately? Post up how you cooked it here and if it was a success. Doesn't only have to be fish....

The things you find, & then turn them into Dinner

Post by maverick »

A bit cryptic, yes. Most days I walk the dogs along the foreshore anywhere from Fishies Beach Mornington to Mt Martha. Was out yesterday morning when I spotted one of the floats from the mussel farm washed up on the rocks. With 3 - 4 days of strong onshore winds, this was not a surprise. Given that I walk here most days, it was obvious that it had only just washed up. Went down and had a look at it.

What a pleasant surprise, it was covered in mussels of various sizes. These floats are used to keep the mussel line afloat and occassionally mussels attach to them. So I picked off the largest mussels, about 2 kgs worth, pushed the float back into the water and walked home.

Dinner last night consisted of an entree' of Blue Rock Dam smoked trout on biscuits followed by a thick tomato based white wine sauce (with vegies) with fresh Mornington mussels and pasta.

Scott's mate is a butcher and regularly smokes his own fish (and meats) so he did the trout for Scott for free, of which Scott kindly gave me one. There is no comparison between wild trout and farm raised fish, just none.

Just thought I would share.

Waste not want not.
A nice reward for an early morning walk.

I can't help but wonder how you carried them all home though... I'm picturing you running up the Esplanade with pockets overflowing and a horde of seagulls in pursuit

Fortunately I had a beanie on, which turned into a mussel carry bag.
