Drift Anchor Fast, safe retrieve Set Up

Post by Hvalross »

Having watched a number of Videos related to setting a Drift Anchor, it seems that much of the advice is based on the assumption that a person will have two hands available and plenty of time because :
there is only one connestion between the vessel and the Drift Anchor.

The idea of a Drift Anchor is that it holds a significant volume of water and slows, or acts as a ballast and turns the vessel in line with the Drift anchor. Getting that set up back aboard requires time and effort that may not be available in an emergency.

What if you are operating a small narrow craft like a Kayak with an anchor trolly. Well it does exactly that from any point you set it at. Thus if it is set at either the bow or the stern retreiving a drift anchor with just one tow point requires time and effort to bring it in when it is full of water and doing what it was designed to do, time a person may not have under certain circumstances, also retrieving side on can expose a person to risk in a building sea, best that is minimised or negated as fast as possible.

The solution is to bring the drift Anchor in backwards, that is narrow end first, that dumps all the water out of the Chute and allows the device to be brought in fast. There are many ways to do that safely, here is one that is SUPER FAST AND CAN BE DONE ONE HANDED.

I operate a 2015 anchor trolly kit and that has two rings with a length of bungee between so a person uses the most apropriate one for the situation using clips not knots or hitches for this set up. It is so quick and effective that it is possible to avoid going broadside altogether, mush safer
Clip, no loose ends, no knot

Above shows that BOTH the yellow line that is attached to the narrow end of the Chute, this line is just about 400mm LONGER than the Black main line to the Chute and the main line are attached to the same clip. This keeps things neat and simple.

The next image shows the Anchor deployed, in this case the trolly ring is close up as it would be when I bring it to hand, then simply grasp the yellow line and that IMMEDIATELY and easily stops the drift anchor working. One hand retrieval is simple and fast.
Mainline (black) is shorter than Retrieve (yellow)

The last image shows that the retrieve is made quick and easy because the narrow end starts to unload the Chute the moment it moves.
The Drift Chute is completely reversed
The Drift Chute is completely reversed

I am in hopes this is used more often in yaks as it is quick, safe and minimises the cords laying around to get tangled and create safety hazards.

I use it all the time because once a fish is landed, or if you are in an emergency, as soon as the narrow end of the Chute is to hand, the Chute and line can be wound up with the line around it safely and tucked away, out of the way, without having to unclip it and it will not interfere with other gear being stowed.
In the event that the vessel tips, the Drift anchor will unravel and deploy, slowing your craft and providing a line to grasp to get back to your yak........if need be!

Cheers

I dont have it on a long rope for the same reason of quick retrieval. Long ropes can tangle lines if casting that way or fish runs around that side.

If you cleat to yak rather than attach to trolley (just pass through), then you can let it loose in an emergency (float on chute). Same reason I cleat anchor.

Also have the reverse pull rope from front to back of it .

Another danger with chutes is tangling them with rudders and mirage drives.
