When you commit to a surf launch...........................!

Post by erik the viking »

Rod has been posting videos for a while now.
A committed 'Stealth' fisho that puts in the k's and gets the results.
His latest 'launch' is not what I would consider doable in my Outback.
But check it out (up to 5:00min) for the launch stuff, the rest is usual for Rokkit.
Enjoy.

What that demonstrates about the skis compared to most SOTs especially Hobies is the narrow footwells, shallow seat recess and lack of tankwell and enclosed hull volume means they are very bouyant and not destabilised by swamping due to minimal water collection. When a hobie gets swamped like that it turns into a bath tub and its all over as it turns into a destabalised unresponsive slug.

That's where you need your balance. It usually drains out before the next wave comes through.

Eric it's a horses for courses thing - look at where kayaks are made and what there main purpose is --- most glass skis are from South Africa with a large off shore fishing group , and some less than friendly surf
I think the biggest advantage is being able to store rods inside the hull for that surf zone - a fast efficient hull doesn't hurt ether

however a glass ski would not be a first choice kayak for a bream fisho - so back to my first point horses for courses
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm -- Elephant fish 85 Cm -- Snapper 91 Cm -- KG Whiting 49 Cm -- Flathead 55 Cm -- Garfish 47 Cm --Long tail Tuna 86 cm -- Silver Trevally 40 Cm -- Cobia 117 Cm -- snook 53 Cm -- Couta 71 Cm -- Squid 44 hood length

For anyone not familiar with Rod's videos, this is the one to watch for the low down on surf launches in a ski. I particularly like the drone footage from the palmy blitz that shows just how far waves can push you back.

Dude certainly makes good vids, and probably a few stealths have been sold as a result of them.

I must admit that not being able to get the rods away and under the deck is a bit annoying occasionally.
Whether be it a surf/wet launch or the old river rapids.
But I won't be swapping craft anytime soon :eh:
