After only reading the new overhang laws a couple of days ago i was a bit worried given i have about 50cm of overhang past the end of the trailer. Put a red flag on the back of it, and plan to register it as a boat trailer sometime soon.
Driving home after a fish today, guess who rolls up behind me.. Yep, police... but nothing happened, they just overtook me and drove off.. feel pretty lucky given some other comments, touch wood they continue to turn a blind eye..

GAWD!! How did you guys get your modded trailers registered as a boat trailer?
Just been talking to Vicroads and they will NOT register my 6x4 with an extended draw bar (same as Bilbys) as a boat trailer and a 6x4 with an extended draw bar will not legally be able to carry the PA either, I would need to have a trailer at least 9x4.
I did clarify the no overhang on a trailer though and they said that a load can overhang front and rear 60% of the length from the axel to the rear which means for a 6x4 trailer i can only have a total length of 2880mm not long enough for the PA.

Hi,
I registered my trailer as a box trailer, but got it registered at the fully extended length, which is 4.2 mtr. I asked the woman and got the same speil as yourself, she couldn't find anything about front overhang in the trailer builders guild, i was also told that its better than not having any rego ??. I reckon get it registered, put a red cloth on the back and go fishing. I am in the process of building a custom trailer for the PA, this mod was only ever intended as a stop gap until i did it.

Hi
Here are the rules from Vicroads about wether a trailer needs to be registered-
•it is used for business purposes, or
•is specifically constructed to carry a boat or is carrying a boat and
•weighs more than 200kg unladen, or
•is wider than the towing vehicle, or
•is more than three metres in length, including the draw-bar and load.
Cheers

Re: 6X4 TRAILER CONVERSION TO SUIT PA (finished pics )
Mate the laws are a load of crap, every boat trailer on the road has "overhang" no one at Vic roads could confirm the proper "laws" so if they don't know, i say feckit and go fishing. I have the trailer registered as a 4.2 mtr box trailer, as they wouldn't register it as a boat trailer (even after i told them the yak would be on it 99 % of the time), the load is a yak it could be a 4.2 mtr bit of wood. Technically a yak isn't a boat as it has no motor, i will see how i go anyway, too many fines and i'll go to plan B.
Cheers Bilby.

Re: 6X4 TRAILER CONVERSION TO SUIT PA (finished pics )
There is no need to take the trailer in to Vic roads as they do not need to see the trailer to rego it. Don't mention anything about being a box trailer, tell them you have a boat trailer you need to rego, you only need the width and length measurements. I only rego'd mine as a boat trailer so I can park in "boat trailer reserved parks" instead of walking a mile.
Cheers Gary...

The trailer company reckons two bars would do but I think 3 would be more stable . They also suggest bolting arrangement for bars and not sleeve arrangement which was my first idea
any suggestions
