Great to see another newbie to yak fishing, likewise I'm quite fairly new to it as well and can offer some tips when heading out for the first few times;

Don't overload ya yak, can be very nice to have everything ya need (plus what you really don't) but all the extra weight can make the experience a little off putting. Especially when the catch is so little for the huge effort put in. Also make sure anything you have on board is well secured as losing anything over the side is not worth experiencing (many stories on VYak about and lost a few items myself I wish never happened, but a great lesson learnt, maybe something you don't want to go thru)...

Having strong knowledge of the areas ya plan to fish is always great to have (& a must to always build on & forums like this really do help) but yak fishing can sometimes throw all that out the window. By this I mean if ya used to fishing out of a boat especially a sizable one, getting in the yak for fish ya need to check & re-check the conditions to make sure you will be coming home safe & sound. Please don't take this as me trying to scare or put you off, just sharing my experiences. You will become very addicted to yak fishing as it's like no other fishing I have ever done, best way to get as close as possible to the action & rewards it pays out just can't be beat.

Wish you all the best with you yak fishing journey & also which area ya from?

ROB THANKS HEAPS I APPRECITE IT ALL AND AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEW EXPIRIENCE ILL FISH ANYWHERE ITS SAFE AND THE FISH ARE

Cheers, Rob.

I mainly fish WPB, east side... I find it plenty safe but also got an eye out on the whether... Reef island has to be one of my favourite areas (mainly because I've spent a lot of time around the area) plus it does offer some great sights to see especially if the fish are not biting... N being to new to it all as yourself I'm happy to share what I can... My work stops me from getting out as much as I'd like (damn those trains needing to be built) but trying to post up all my catches and building myself up to writing some trip reports... I'm always keen to hear how others have gone so let me know if ya up for it...

Some spots nearby:
Flatties salmon and squid can all be caught at ALtona or Point Cook (Campbells Cove)
@Altona the flattie grounds are over by the pier, salmon are all over the shallow reef from Millers road to the pier and squid cann be caaught left of Millers launch or alternatively over at skeleton creek.
Nearby spots for Bream are the 'Nong from Canning street reserve (C&R) or Docklands.
Redfin are everywhere but there are some cracking ones in Lake Wendouree and nice trout there too.
Everyone keeps there cod spots pretty quiet but Lake Nagambie to Kirwan's area on the Golburn is worth a look.
Yellas can be caught as close as Albert Park (C&R) :shhh:

The first time you find yourself in the middle of a pod of dolphins is a buzz too.
