Second-hand 1st Yak

Post by gfisho »

So after a slightly ill-informed choice of buying a short 2.65m wavedance encore on the cheap.
I paddled in it and I decided I needed a bigger kayak if I want to fish the salt properly.
Anyhoo, It's a Scorpio Terrapin XL 3.8m

Missing the centre hatch unfortunately otherwise in good condition
C'kayaks want $92  for a new one which is about 1/3 of what i paid for it. So I'll have to make something up :?:
Any ideas?

Cant wait for the maiden voyage.
Probably just take one rod and flick some jigs around Fishermans beach/ Mt. Martha / Sunnyside

What shape is the centre hatch?

If circle, how about getting something like this

http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/40163622/

and cutting it with a jigsaw into the shape you're after.

Also, stuff the hull with foam noodles, that way if it fails and you take a wave over, you wont sink

There is no centre hatch, my bad. I meant compartment.

The black cover for the centre compartment. Comes with scotty/rail blaza ready holder points and a ruler and drink compartment etc.
old mate i bought it off lost it :(
I guess because of poor design as it is/was velcroed/clipped on & not hinged.
Its a hard act to follow to come up with something like that!

With the pool noodles wont they absorb water and just be giant sponges?

I am only going to be hopefully paddlin on glass 8-)

I should be able to make something for that hatch

Pool noodles don't absorb water, they float.

Gday guy, welcome to the site. I also have a terrapin xl, im very happy with mine, although they are a tad on the heavy side. In regards to the center console, they usually come with a couple of those clip in straps to hold it down which are screwed into the yak either side of the console, i just used a couple of stainless bolts nuts and washers to puth through the straps onto the lid so it cant be seperated from the yak.. Would suck to buy/make one then lose it again! Since someone else on here has a terrapin xl aswell now i might put up a build thread of mine so far. Anyway enjoy the yak and be safe! :)

Good idea with fixing it I cannot see why it wasn't already possibly for the shipping of a lot of these yaks ?
Dunno.
I'm thinking the next thing I put in its place will def be fixed!
I would love to see a few photos of your terrapin mods !
Transducer especially !

Hatters yep that statement is 100% correct.
I dunno why I thought if it were fully immersed in water it would absorb some of it.
Dun goofed pretty solidly :ugeek:
