Worth knowing

Websites are beginning to mine Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies using web browsers (i.e. if you visit a website, you mine coins for them using your electricity and with a hit to browser and computer performance), https://fossbytes.com/safebrowse-chrome ... cpu-power/

The article above mentions The PirateBay and a browser extension called Safe Browse. I suspect there are more. Anywhere you have javascript enabled may potentially mine Cryptocurrency for somebody else via https://coin-hive.com/, however, there may be other websites that offer a similar service.

There is a method to redirect coin-hive (effectively blocking it) but this will be the thin edge of the wedge.

It is growing exponentially and has now spread to phones.

If your web browser is performing slowly (make that, even more slowly that normal), start researching how to block crypto-mining.

So the short of it is for those that don't understand tech, close your browser down at the end of using a site

The short of it is if you have performance problems with ANY website, there is a possibility they are using you to mine cryptocurrency and you'll need to do some research how to prevent crypto mining via your web browser.

There are some extensions that claim to do that but I cannot say whether or not they are effective or whether they don't do the same (the internet is full of dodgy things).

If you are a windows user, you can block via your hosts file. The easy part of that is the sites to block get updated via the hosts.txt file on the following (just check occasionally and update your hosts file).

The hard part about is learning how to use your hosts file :wtf:

Assuming I can make the explanation simple and short, the hosts file tells Windows to redirect websites. Assuming you have coinhive.com in your hosts file like the following line
0.0.0.0 coinhive.com
Windows will redirect your browser communication with coinhive to IP address 0.0.0.0 (local host). In other words, it talks to your PC instead of coinhive, so does nothing. Hosts can also be use to stop advertising, bad websites, etc, etc.

Another example (but don't do this)
If you put
www.vyak.net 0.0.0.0
in your hosts file, after restarting your computer your browser would give a message the site cannot be reached.

I believe there is a similar method to block sites via Apple operating systems but it is not something I have researched.

It seems all you need to do at the moment is become a listed company and then once listed add the word "cryptocurrency" to your name to make a squillion bucks!
I was reading today how an Israeli company switched from investing in mining minerals to mining bitcoins and their stocks rose 2400%.
Sounds easy except for the fact you need a supercomputer the size of your house to "mine" the cryptocurrency.
Strange times indeed!

Sorry, a little off topic.

It should be outlawed, these people that do it use our data but even worse, here in au our network is 3rd world and the extra information required to be transmitted across our networks is just slowing it down.
