Thanks for the info Dan,

My trailer is registered and I hang an orange flag from the overhanging stern so I might actually be legal.

My main reason in wanting to car top it is to have the option to go to launches that don't have trailer parking. Trailering it sure is easy and would probably still be my preference where parking is not an issue but I'd like the option.

Cheers,
Ben

If you have a look at the VicRoads web site there is info on overhang with trailers. I've been carting my 2 Outbacks on an unregistered 6x4 box trailer and the police havent stopped me but I have been told it should be registered as a boat trailer, and I guess they would be shorter than your yak.

Cheers jaybird01, interesting that VicRoads don't require us to register the kayak but the trailer should be registered as a boat trailer. I think I'll run the gauntlet with my registered box trailer. I think it is a pretty safe setup.

Looks good time2fish. I have some ideas kicking around in my head for my PA14.

I used to car top my PA14 on a BT50 dual cab with fibreglass canopy. I have 3 roof bars and the rear one is close enough to the back to be able to rest the bow of the yak on it with the stern on the ground. Then just slide it forward as you lift. I have since bought a folding trailer off Ebay which has done the job very well for the last 2 years was pretty cheap and with the addition of longditudinal timber runners lined up with the grooves in the hull it is a solid loading without the lift as I am getting older and the yak is not getting any lighter.

Doesn't have to be a boat trailer but any trailer that is longer than 3m from towball to rear of load (Including any overhang) needs to be a registered trailer. Hence 6 x 4 trailers are generally just less than this to get around it. So any over hang which any kayak longer than 3m will have will technically mean it needs to a registered trailer. Though in reality unless they are having a blitz, if it is not obviously extreme they dont seem to bother much.

I picked up a second hand Rhino T-load and fitted it to my Falcon wagon on the weekend.

I now appreciate how much easier it is to use a trailer. Maybe I was doing it wrong but it was easy enough to load but getting it down was pretty awkward. Might just need a bit of practice. I'm no runt but it was hard to pull the kayak back off the racks.

Not having to rely on launches that have trailer parking really appeals to me so I'm not giving up on car topping it just yet. The Falcon is just about due to be replaced car so a car topping solution will have to be a consideration for the replacement vehicle.
