Re: Hobie TI 2012 - AKA Lock Kit Hinged Hook upgrade

Must admit... while drilling a sheared screw out, I was reflecting on the idea that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”... To reduce the risk of a screw shearing off in the housing: - cut the plastic off with a hacksaw (cut close to screws), pliers can be used to twist the plastic out....

Risk: the screws holding the plastic locking piece at the end of the knuckles can shear off if you simply approach this job with a screwdriver. Hindsight: the screws are easier to remove, ...

Re: Safety Equipment Poll

I'd say that safety on the water, in a kayak, does not come from the safety equipment... This is not to say the safety equipment doesn't help manage some of the risks... There are some key risks in PPB & the local area which should also be taken into account before venturing out... e.g. will the...

Re: Was buying a tandem kayak a good idea?

Yes... it was a great idea to buy a Tandem Island. Why? great family activity (three boys, added tramps, seats on AKA's); ultra-stable (but thesafety rule is: don't go on the bay in >15 knots as conditions can change quickly); great for a sail when the fishing is slow; great for sailing to or from t...

Re: Drogue for coming through the breakers?

I prefer the 'body drogue' when landing in surf. Setup a good hand- hold at the back of the kayak, in you go. Works well, ensure you have a firm hold. While I've never had to let go for any reason, I wouldn't be leashed on, just in case I had to let go on the way in. I figure there's less risk of be...
