I think you're referring to the 'R' clip, which are common. The ones I'm talking about look like the linch pin but instead of having a circle 'rat trap' (so they can only go over the end of a shaft) they have a similar spring loaded device that goes around the side of the pipe. I find pipe lynch (linch) clevis pins more useful as you can use them half way along a pipe/shaft and not just at the end. Not as easy to come across though, but don't bit as hard as the 'rat trap ones.

I use a couple to hold my wheels in the scuppers when transporting.
