Having a kayak stirrup for many kayaks would help even if placed at the rear.

Another good reason to have a PLB, phone in waterproof pouch & VHF Handheld attached to your pfd.
In some situations a lanyard of sorts would be good but if you do please keep a knife on you in case you get stuck under the yak.

Also keep a good floating waterproof torch that you can have next to you. I keep mine on a lanyard attached to my seat.
I always use a light until there's plenty of daylight or I'm on dry ground (not run aground )
