Re: Advice on box trailer for the outback

In terms of rails to support the Yak, I've opted for PVC. It's cheap and easy to install or remove from the trailer, bends to match the curve of the hull and gives supports with a bit of shock absorption. Here's the rails set up for the AI on my beaten up old trailer. The trailer is a 6x4 that has h...

Re: Tankerton?

Stony Point ramp would be the closest launch point. However I wouldn't recommend you making that crossing unless you already have a lot of experience kayaking and in that area of westernport specifically. The tide flows very hard there most of the time and it is also exposed to a lot of wind in the ...

Re: 6x4 extension for PA

If you put a kayak on the trailer it then is classed as a boat trailer according to vicroads but l haven't been pulled over in 4 years for it not being registered, there are alson other regulations regarding it's size and the vehicle towing it, but if you travel interstate it's better to have it re...

It needs to be registered if over 3m in length including the draw bar. So typically you would need to register an extended draw bar trailer.

Re: Dead kayaker

Incredibly sad and tragic. :( This article and video should be mandatory viewing for anyone contemplating taking a short yak any decent distance from shore. The conditions were what I would consider relatively benign for an experience kayaker with appropriate equipment (kayak, safetey gear and cloth...

Re: New Member from Bayside Area

Welcome Craig. Sounds like you've taken a smart route into the sport so far. There would be plenty of people fishing from yaks around your area on a good day. Unfortunately the peak action for the area is in snapper season, so several months away yet. Stilll there are plenty of decent flatties,...

Re: How Do You Lose A Shark Or Big Pelargic?

Thanks Pete, You've certainly given it a lot of thought. I think I'll be trying to keep it simple for my first encounter of SWR. I'm not set up for live bait, so will probably be trawling squid strips & plastics, and just see what happens  SWR is primarily a live bait fishery. Lures w...

Re: How Do You Lose A Shark Or Big Pelargic?

First of all at SWR you should always be rigging with a long wind on leader section between the braid and the leader to the hook. Typical rig would be 20/30/50lb braid connected to 20-30m of 30-40lb mono with an FG knot. Then connect the mono to a fluro leader with a small/strong black swivel or a k...

Re: pedal drive v longer yak in the bay

A peddel drive won't make up for having a shorter yak. Yes paddling a shorter yak is very difficult and can be dangerous in rough conditions. A pedal drive can help with maintaining momentum into wind but there are numerous other factors to consider when its rough. One of the main ones is being able...
