Re: Storing a yak for an extended period.

I would store it flat on its bottom and fully supported along its whole length, covered with no weight on it. If it gets really hot in the container any unsupported sections could droop to the point of damage. I'd also look into improving the ventilation in the container. Don't let this happen: http...

Re: Tips wanted for buying a second hand Hobie AI

With 2009, check whether it has the ammas that clip straight in or the pins. I suspect the latter, there were a few issues on earlier models that took until about 2012 to iron out. There is a list of changes by year of the Hobiecat forums. Also be very careful with cracks around the mirage drive in ...

Re: Bimini twist

Never used a bimini twist and wouldn't be inclined to. It's a bit overkill imho, particularly when an FG does the job well and can be retied on the water.

Re: Altona P2

It's definitely on my radar for 2021 Brian. I think I need more experience, skill and stamina to tackle the rigours of the NSC comp. It's already on my bucket list to do. Cheers! You should do this years comp anyway. I've won major prize packs mainly through fish caught a couple of hundred metres f...

Re: Altona P2

I've done P2 several times in the yak. It's better to go from Williamstown as it's slightly shorter and avoids boat traffic from Altona ramp, especially in the dark. However it's not a trip to do if you don't have the necessary experience and stamina. It's also best to go with someone else. In the A...

Re: Burley Techniques

Heavy burley pot suspended a metre off the bottom under the yak. Let the burley disperse out from the pot with the current. Replenish as needed.

Re: Should I give Altona a go...

I'll be out in the area early Saturday but I'll be sailing in the AI towards P2. Early morning would generally be OK in close if it stays westerly. Once it turns SW-S later and strengthens it will get very uncomfortable in the Compass. Sunday is a much better forecast for Altona if you can head out ...

Re: How small would you keep?

Smallest I've kept would be around 10kg. I've caught smaller but released those. My preferred size is generally 15kg or above. I'm tempted to take the yak down this weekend but had already committed to taking our car that's banned from carrying yaks. I will be freediving for crays from the s...
