Re: Kayak for Altona area
Stay away from choppy conditions, the smaller nose of the 11 lacks the bouyancy of the bigger boats so the nose will dive more into waves causing front hatch to take on water in severe conditions. You dont want to be caught out at altona cardinal if a strong southerly blows up. Top advice!! I don't...

Re: Kayak for Altona area
Thanks to everyone who provided advice. I settled on a Hobie Quest 11, which I got after chatting with the guys at Action Sports in Geelong. At $1850, it was a bit more than I was originally hoping to pay but it ticked all my needs and I figure that Hobie is the best and will serve me well for quite...

Re: Kayak for Altona area
A quick update on my search (for any who are interested in beginners fumbling around). I've spent a lot of time reviewing a lot of kayaks and spent some time talking with the folks at Capacity Sports in Moorabbin for all things Viking and Native and everything in between. I even checked out a very r...

Kayak for Altona area
Hi All, I am hoping to get some advice on a fishing kayak for the Altona / PPB area. Currently I have a small 3m cheap kayak that is just awful (bad tracking, hard to move etc.) I am looking for something around 3.5-4m so I can paddle around the bay. I don't expect to go too far (no more than a few ...

Re: trying to understand wind
Thanks for all the advice! This was exactly what I needed to read. You will all be pleased to read that I finally managed to get my yak into the water this morning! It was so awesome! I think I'm hooked. I paddled around, got used to the kayak. Tested some of the small swell at different angles and ...

trying to understand wind
Hi guys, I hope as you've all been newbies at one point or another that this is a familiar question (or I'm just a wuss). I have been trying to get out for my first trip in Altona (Millers Road) but the wind always seems too high for my first trip (over 10knots) on Wilylweather and other sites. But ...

Wind conditions
Hi guys, Is there a place that has a listing for wind conditions and different types of yaks. For instance, I have my scout (as a beginner) but I'm not sure what wind conditions I will be comfortable with. I was thinking of only going out when the conditions are less than 5 knots until I got more co...
