Polystyrene transducer mount?
G'day all.. Just a quick question.. Would a small block of polystyrene be ok to mount the transducer in the hull of my yak? Thanks in advance

Re: Polystyrene transducer mount?
Water tightness... should be ok
Durability... not the best
How it will react to the glue you intend to use... don't know. You might end up with a puddle of goo (test the glue on a sample piece first)

As Hatters pointed out most solvents don't react well with it, also you would want to make sure it was closed cell.
there are way better options out there.

Try using EVA foam. Clark rubber stocks it. You can carve/shape it easily and it glues with silastic type compounds.

Whatever you use dont use a too thin piece if you are thinking of a wet well. Yak rocks around and it will spill out

You can buy them from Hobie dealers cut to size for 5 bucks, or buy the kit with the Marine Goop as well..
Cheers Gary...

I used one of these for the first time the other day, brilliant, and easy to install

Re: Polystyrene transducer mount?
I originally used a 4" wet PVC plumbing type well shooting through the hull. Worked OK for a while, but leaked after half a dozen trips and each time I used a different glue, goo, silastic, the same thing happened. Eventually, tossed the whole idea and made a stainless bracket which I fitted to the rudder for the transducer. No problems for the next few years. Clear image on sounder, until yak slipped off trailer at a roundabout. Transducer took most of the impact and was sheared in half like I'd taken an angle grinder to it. Probably saved the yak from more severe damage. Will reuse the same mount when I eventually replace the damaged sounder with a new one.

Cut up an old thong (not the type Ghurkin wears) or some old camp mat.
