Noob Yak

This is how my yak is looking at the moment. About to set up the battery for the sounder, and going to add a couple more rod holders soon.
And possibly a light for night fishing.

What would you guys think about taking this yak out in salt water?
I currently only use it in lakes and rivers, but after reading reports and watching vids I'm keen to have a go for some flatties or pinkies.
I've heard that there are some good spots to try in Geelong, like the Yacht Club & Grammar School Lagoon?

That sounder is going to be in the way there. Your going to bash it with your paddle.

It doies look like the sounder might get in the way of the paddle, does it? you could possibly mount it between your legs somewhere.

Do not go out in wind or chop, it will catch the wind and you will struggle to keep it pointing in a straight line let alone make headway. I know I tried it a couple of times in a short yak. If you do get an anchor and drift chute.

The bay is deceptive, the wind can pick up real quick

Went for a paddle at Lake Esmond today & everything's working fine.
My paddle does not hit the sounder.

And yes, if I were to go out in salt water I'd always be close to shore or have someone else with me.

Hey mate, for what its worth here's my two cents:

I was close to buying one of those. They are a good yak for what they are. The only reason I didn't get one was because I got a good deal on a second hand Malibu Mini X.

I did alot of research on those Emotions and you could take it out in the bay, but be wary of wind speed/direction and swift changes.

As mentioned, short anf stubby yaks can be difficult to paddle in wind and so stay close to shore and try and go with a buddy.

Try not to overload that yak as the weight capacity is about 107kg.

Good beginners yak, especially for your neck of the woods where you need something short and nimble.

hairbear has that exact yak, I've seen it perform in some sydenham chop and it handles it ok, just get a bit wet. More of a river craft IMO, but will handle some bay stuff. They sit very low in the water so almost every wave goes over the top of you rather than you going over it if that makes sense Don't let it stop you though, my first yak was one of those top quality ( ) barges they sell for $200 at BCF.

Looks very similar to my first kayak too.
IMO you just have to use some smarts. Pick your days, mind the tides, make sure you have all the safety equipment and you'll be fine close to shore in the bay.

Just recently upgraded from a yak similar to that yes you can get out on the bay during very calm weather and just be careful don't go to far out and if it even slightly starts to get choppy then come back in an check it out for a few minutes to see if it stops in my opinion I wish I had have gone straight to the outback but it got me out fishing and that is the main part
