Interesting looking at AKFF tonight with a post from the Site Administrator (Scott) advising that the he has sold the forum to Verticalscope, a corporation that owns hundreds of forums around the world.
It appears Scott did this without informing any of the Mods or users. From my quick searching around the net it appears that the history on forums sold to Verticalscope has not been all rosey. Verticalscope appear to have introduced rules on some forums where they have a license to use all of the content and photo's etc that are posted on the site. Some forums also quickly become link farms and this appears to be happening with AKFF already.
It'll be interesting to see where this goes and how it pans out. Maybe it will be back to almost business as usual in no time, who knows? All I can say is hang in there Wisda, I personally would prefer not to see Vyak become a corporate property.

Always been curious about how much money the big forums make.

Some of them can go somewhere else in my opinion!
That is the only place in 10 years of forums that I have applied "Foes" and that is for 2 members!
It has had some interesting topics, though I seldom post there now.

I went elsewhere. Still working on the foe status
The sale seemed like a case of treachery to the mods. I wonder whether the new owners will change the mods and reduce some of the banter that must be off-putting to some newbies?

AKFF???? Who, what, where?? Never visited the site....as a proud Victorian my preference has been to take an interest in what my fellow Victorian fishing colleagues are doing and enjoying their company at a camp, comp or lunch. Vyak provides all the fishing information I need and gives everyone the opportunity to interact with some great people and learn more about our local fisheries and how best to fish them. Keep up the good work
There.....that should get me some brownie points with the Mods

Re: AKFF Sold
Despite what anyone may think of AKFF, I hope the significance of this is not lost on members (of any forum). This is part of a world wide trend where big media corporations like VerticalScope and Internet Brands specialise in owning and running hundreds of internet forums. These are corporations who's primary focus is to make money for their shareholders, their forums are essentially just a means to sell as much advertising as they can. Their primary interest in their forum communities extends to the ability for them to generate revenue and they will run these forums to protect their interest. And it's not just normal advertising but adlinks and membership fees that can also be used to generate revenue. Virtualscope have bought out many of the forums involving car and bike enthusiiasts, pet owners and power sports and more recently expanding into fishing.
In the case of AKFF the domain was owned by one individual - the site admin. Legally he owned the webpage that hosts the forum and to a corporation like Verticalscope that forum had a value. That administrator hadn't posted on the forum for over 6 months but out of the blue he put up a post saying that the forum was now owned by a Virtualscope (a corporation in Canada). No-one actually involved in the day to day running of the site content (Mods and members)was informed or consulted about this. The community of people on the forum probably thought that they had some common ownership in the place. After all they had created all of the content, banter and advice and had moderated and kept things running on a voluntary basis. It's understandable that what has happened would feel like a betrayel. I'm glad it's not my home but it has certainly opened up my eyes to what can happen.

I have mentioned to Babylon in the past how vyak dosent have the usual bull sh1t other forums seam to be flooded with.
Like any family, there will be dramas, but they are far and few. That's thanks to the Mods here doing a stellar job, not to mention the great bunch of ppl that frequent the forum.
