Lets kick off with the extra safety gear required for offshore trips.
(Amended from Shane's post in the Tuna thread)

All of the requirements are listed at this website:
http://transportsafety.vic.gov.au/marit ... 1484373447

For fresh/estuary/inshore waters the following is required:

-Type 1,2 or 3 PFD
-Bailer/sponge (if no bilge pumping system)
-Electric or manual bilge pumping system (if enclosed underfloor areas)

For Offshore (>2NM/3.7km from land) its the above plus:

-Waterproof torch
-Spare oar or paddle
-2 orange smoke flares and 2 red distress flares (Tackleworld sell them as a pack for ~$60)
-Compass (dedicated, gps/sounder or phone in case?)
-Registered EPIRB (not PLB)

Recommended Extras:
-Hi-vis safety flag (So boats/other yakkers can see you in swell)
-Phone in waterproof case
-GPS/sounder with maps
-VHF marine radio
-PLB
-Tow rope (15m long tow & short contact tow)
-Paddle float/stirrup as required.
-Kwells/seasickness tablets if required

Try to fish with a buddy and organise a plan of attack before hitting the water, it can be pretty easy to lose track of each other in big swells.

Great summary Eoin.

A fishing buddy probably should be added to the list, open water is a big place on a yak by yourself, peace of mind knowing someone is nearby to lend a hand... God help you though if you hook a barrel!
